Is this site Free?  Back to top of page
While it is free to register and free to place an ad on the site, and while you can search the database for free, and use most of the site for free, Lovebyrd.com does charge a membership fee if you want to contact someone you find on the site, or if you see someone online you want to chat with instantly and privately. Use of the chatroom is free, however a member might be online but not in the chatroom and you might be interested in using the instant messaging system to send an invitation to that member to chat with you. In order for you to do that you need to have a premium account.
How do I correct information in my profile?  Back to top of page
To correct information in your profile, if you are not already logged in, log in to the members only area of the site. On the left of the page you will see your "Personal Menu". Use the link My Ad Manager to correct information in your profile.
I don't remember my username or my password. What should I do?  Back to top of page
If you registered with a legitimate email address your username and password can be sent to you. Just click on any Lost password link you find and enter the email address you registered. Your username and password will be sent as long as the email address you enter is found in your files. You cannot enter a different email address from the one that you registered.
How do I chat with other members?  Back to top of page
To chat with other members you need to enter the chatroom by clicking on the "Chat Room" link on the horizonatal menu at the top of the page or the "Join Chat" link under the "Control Menu" on the leftside of the page.

Note: you will need to have a java enabled browser in order to access the chatroom.

How do I change my challenge/diagnosis?  Back to top of page
If for some reason you have selected the wrong disability and need to change your disability you will need to request assistance by posting in the "I need to change my disability/challenge" forum. Simply provide your screen name and the correct challenge name and the admin will make the change for you.
What can members with "free account" status do on the site?  Back to top of page
A standard (free account status) member is a Lovebyrd.com registrant who does not have access to premium services offered. Most of the Lovebyrd.com services are provided free of charge to all users; however, the ability to initiate contact with other members and initiate instant messaging chat sessions with other members is restricted to premium subscribers only. Standard members who receive mail from premium members can reply to their mail but they cannot be the first to initiate contact. Standard members also cannot initiate an instant messaging conversation with another member. However they can accept instant messaging invitations that other members send.
Why do you have to approve messages I send out?  Back to top of page
Lovebyrd.com, like many other services of its kind, is targeted by individuals who join the site so they can contact large numbers of people with fraudulent offers. Lovebyrd.com has installed a system that allows an admin to check a member's message before sending the message to the member. This allows the admin to catch spam and fraud before it reaches a member.

Messages are only approved if a member requests to have his/her messages approved. To request to have messages approved you need to login to your account, click the "My Preferences" link under the control menu and check the box where it asks if you want to have your messages approved.

What is a subscriber?  Back to top of page
A subscriber is a Premium member. A premium member is someone who is paying a fee to use those services on Lovebyrd.com that can only be accessed by members who are paying a subscription fee. For information about the services that are accessible to subscribers(premium members) only refer to What are the premium services offered?
What is a registrant?  Back to top of page
A registrant is any Lovebyrd.com member who has an account, whether it is a premium(subscriber) account or a Standard(Free/non-subscriber) account.
What are the premium services offered?  Back to top of page
Most of the Lovebyrd.com website is completely free for all registrants to use; however, in order to send messages to other members you need to have a premium subscription. If a paying member sends you a message you can reply to that message; but you cannot be the first to contact another member unless you have a premium account. You also cannot send instant messaging chat invitations unless you are a premium member. That means if another member is online but not in the chatroom and you want to talk to with them using the Lovebyrd Instant messenger, you must have a premium account in order to send them an invitation. However, if they send you an invitation, you are able to accept it and chat with them that way.
How do I contact members?  Back to top of page
If you are a Premium member, you contact members by using the Contact link that appears at the top of each member's profile. Or if you happen to be visiting the forums, you can contact a member by clicking on any "PM" button that appears with the member's posts. The "PM" buttons look as shown:
Send private message

You can also check the chatrooms to see if there are any members chatting, and you can chat in the main chatroom with everyone, or you can send an invitation to someone in the chatroom if you want to chat with them privately.

If you are not a premium member you can send ice breakers to other members by clicking the "Send Ice Breaker" link at the top of the member's profile. Ice breakers are prewritten messages. You can select a prewritten message and send it to another member.

I never received my activation code. What should I do?  Back to top of page
If you did not activate your membership, the first time you try to login you will be asked to enter your activation code. There is a link on this page to resend the activation code if you never received it. Click this link to have your activation code resent. **Note that if the reason you did not receive your activation code is that you entered an invalid or otherwise incorrect email address, the code will be sent to the same address so you still will not receive it. In that event you should register again with a valid email. If your email is valid, it could be that your mailbox is full and could not accept the email containing your validation code, or your email service provider is treating emails that come from our server as spam and redirecting it to your spam folder or deleting it altogehter.

AOL members are known to have problems receiving their activation code. You need to add lovebyrd@disaboom.com to your list of allowed recipients in order to avoid problems receiving mail from our server to your AOL mailbox.

Please check your mailbox to make sure you are not over your storage limit. If you try all suggested avenues and still do not receive your activation code, contact the administrator

Additional FAQs

Zip Code Issues
1. Everytime I try to submit the registration form a prompt comes up telling me to enter my zip code but I don't see any place in the form where I can enter my zipcode.

Some members using web-tv and browsers that don't support javascript are unable to see the zip code entry box due to the incapicity of their system or browser. To fix this problem please upgrade your browser. We recommend Internet Explorer version 6.0

Can't Get Pass Step 4 of registration
2. Everytime I press "Save Changes" after I edit the description of myself and the description of my match in "Step 4" nothing happens. It just comes back to the page and won't move from "Step 4"

More than likely either the description of your self or the description of your match is less than the required number of characters. You are probably not noticing the warning at the top of the page that tells you which has too few characters. Check the top of your page for the message that tells you why you have been returned to Step 4 ***Characters are the individual letters and spaces in your text. If they add up to less than 120 you will be returned to step 4 to correct the problem.

Why am I not getting a response to the message I sent?
3. I contacted a member but I'm not getting an answer. Is something wrong with your system?

Not every member you contact is going to answer you back. If you have written to a member but have not received a response, you can try writing to the member again; however, you should probably assume if the member does not write back after repeated attempts to contact him/her, that the member is not interested. Other possible reasons you might not get an answer:

  1. The member might not have a premier account. To reply to your email the member must have a premier account.

  2. The member might have an email on file that is bouncing. Bouncing means that when the system sends a notification to alert the member that someone has sent him/her a message, the email sent to the member gets returned to the system, either because the email is no longer valid or the member's mailbox is too full to receive it.

How do you decide what's a disability?
4. I am confused about how you decide what's a disability and what is not. There are choices in your list, like obesity, and adult acne for example, that seem to me like they don't fit.

Lovebyrd caters not only to individuals with disabilities, but to indivduals with conditions such as obesity, adult acne, depression, anxiety and various other conditions and challenges that make it more difficult than in ordinary circumstances to find a life partner, or forge meaningful and lasting friendships.

Do you automatically charge my card when my membership term runs out?
5. I have purchased a premium membership. How can I make sure that when my membership term runs out you don't rebill my credit card automatically?

We do not automatically rebill credit cards. Your membership is a one-time purchase that gives you access for the length of time you purchased. When that time runs out, if you want to continue being a premium member you have to buy a new membership term. We do not automatically renew your premium membership after your current term runs out.

Other Payment Options
6. I don't have a credit card/I don't want to use PayPal/I don't want to use my credit card online: what other payment option do I have?

If you don't have a credit card, don't want to use PayPal or simply don't want to use your credit card online, you will have to mail in your payment. To mail in your payment:

1. Decide which level of membership you wish to purchase

  • Lovebyrd.com Bronze Membership $ 14.95 (31 days of premium access)
  • Lovebyrd.com Silver Membership $ 29.95 (93 days of premium access)
  • Lovebyrd.com Gold Membership $ 54.95 (186 days of premium access)
  • Lovebyrd.com Platinum Membership $ 99.95 (372 days of premium access)
  • )
  • Lovebyrd.com Lifetime Membership $ 249.95 (Lifetime premium access)

Changing email address
7. How do I change my email address?

Login to your account and click on the "My Ad Manager" link under the control menu on the leftside of the page. This will take you to the ad manager page. On the ad manager page there is a link "Change Email Address". Click this link to change your email address.

Note: When you change your email address your account will be temporarily suspended until you confirm your new email address. To lift the suspension, you need to check the mail at your new email address and click on the link to reactivate your account.

Temporarily disabling ad/profile
8. I am not going to be using the site for a while but I don't want to cancel my membership. Is it possible to put my profile on hold?

In a manner of speaking, yes, you can put your profile/ad on hold. To accomplish this, login to your account and select "My Preferences" from the control menu.

You will see the following:

You can choose to become invisible on the site. This feature allows you to search for other members while they cannot see you are online and your profile will not show on their searches even if you match. You will be able to attach your profile to messages you send. Note: This may greatly reduce your chances of finding a match.
Yes, I want to hide.

Check the box to hide your profile. Whenever you are ready to unhide your profile follow the same steps only you must uncheck the box next to "Yes, I want to hide"

Looking up a member by name
9. If I know the name of the user how can I access the profile directly?

To directly access the profile of a user login to your account then click on
Click here to search for disabled singles in your area or anywhere in the worldSearch for matches
link in the menu at the top of the page. Scroll down to the "Quick Search" options and where it says "By screen name", enter the name of the member. If the member has an ad posted the ad will show up when you click on the "Go" button. If the member does not have an ad posted, there will be a message that says "No members were found matching your criteria."
